Dave Rearick - Spirit of A Dream: A Sailor's Ultimate Journey Around the World Alone

Famed solo ocean racer Dave Rearick discusses and signs copies of his new book, Spirit of a Dream: A Sailor's Ultimate Journey Around the World Alone. The full circumnavigation took 256 days to complete, leaving an indelible memory of the challenges and rewards of the solitude of the open sea.

On October 2, 2013, Dave Rearick began an epic solo voyage around the world. Onboard his specifically built Class 40 racing sloop appropriately named "Bodacious Dream," Dave sailed from Newport, Rhode Island across the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Town, South Africa, 8000 miles distant. From Cape Town, Dave sailed to Wellington, New Zealand where "Bo" was originally built, and then on to the fabled Galapagos Islands, one of Earth's great nature preserves. On the final leg, Dave returned to Newport, Rhode Island by way of the Panama Canal. The full circumnavigation took 256 days to complete.

At age 12, Dave Rearick was introduced to sailing on a small boat. By the age of 14, he was captivated by the stories of legendary sailors who raced or sailed singlehandedly around the world. 40 years later, in 2011, at age 54, Dave finally began his quest to race the Singlehanded Global Ocean Race. When that  race was canceled, Dave, undaunted, continued his quest and embarked on the long-dreamed adventure that became a journey of learning and discovery. Join Dave and Bodacious Dream as they navigate the oceans of the world alone and meet personal challenges along the way. Check out Dave's blog about his around-the-world trip, with educational materials for kids of all ages at www.bodaciousdreamexpeditions.com

Dave says, "The Great Lakes have been my home since 9 years old.  I’ve grown up in the middle of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park and have a keen relationship with wild areas… regardless of where they are. I love the open desert as much as the wide ocean. I’ve experienced first-hand the health of the ocean and have shed tears with dolphins as they swim through polluted waters.  It’s time friends, it’s time to work on this problem. The ocean can heal if we stop beating it up."
