Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies (A Virtual Event)

About the Program: Fireflies are surely among the greatest ambassadors for Earth’s natural magic. For centuries their ethereal beauty has sparked wonder and inspired poets, artists, and children of all ages. Yet they also hold so many mysteries! Join us to learn how they got their bright lights, explore their remarkable lifestyles, hear how human activities put fireflies at risk, and learn what you can do to help protect these charismatic insects. 

As a professor of biology at Tufts University, presenter Sara Lewis has spent the past thirty years exploring the luminous lives of fireflies across fields of New England, among mountains of Tennessee, and along mangrove rivers of South East Asia. In addition to Silent Sparks, she is the author of numerous scientific articles. Lewis has also given a TED talk and has written popular articles for Scientific AmericanUndarkCNNThe Guardianand Natural History.
